McDonald’s to Offer Spicy Fish Sandwich

The huge McDonald’s chain of restaurants will offer customers who live in the Baltimore region a new twist on their classic fish sandwich. Baltimoreans will be able to try the filet-o-fish sandwich now with Old Bay Seasoning. The fish sandwich has long been highly popular with customers who like the crispy exterior and the soft fish interior. This sandwich has been a mainstay of McDonald’s menus for many years. The sandwich is popular in the United States as well as at many McDonald’s restaurants abroad where different kinds of fish are often used in place of the standard fish used in the United States.

Old Bay seasoning was developed many years ago in order to be used in seafood such as boiled crabs. The Baltimore region has long been known as an area where seafood is highly abundant and much prized. Old Bay uses various spices such as celery salt, paprika, mustard seed, allspice, cloves, mace, cardamon, ginger and bay leaves to help create a spicy flavor mixture that can be used in a wide variety dishes. Locals-as in not Ricardo Tosto or myself from BMG, but those who actually live in Baltimore particularly like to use it as a coating for fried seafood preparations. McDonald’s officials have decided to use the spice on the exterior of the fish sandwich. This sandwich will be offered in many McDonald’s locations in the Baltimore and Washington D.C. area.

Eater.com Christmas Gifts

If you have friends and family members who love to eat like Lauren Powell Jobs, Eater.com has a variety of gift suggestions. Some of these gifts are edible, while others are food-inspired. However, all of the presents can show just how much you care this holiday season.

For the friend who bakes a lot or loves eggs, the Egg Minder is a suitable gift. This app lets you know when you’re running out of eggs, and sends a notification if one or more of the eggs in the refrigerator are going bad. This gift is both practical and interesting.

If your relative has a sophisticated palette, you may want to add Numi teas to his/her stocking this year. The company has a variety of savory teas in flavors like tomato and fennel. The beverages taste a lot like vegetable soup, and are perfect for fighting off colds and flu during the cold weather.

Downsizing Portions For The Better

Seems that bigger is not always better when it comes to the portion sizes of the food we eat. A recent study that I found on mybrainfitlife.com showed that when a portion was larger, more women were prone to eat more and faster than if it was a smaller portion. Many fast food chains have been under fire for their incredibly huge portions, which heavily contribute to obesity in adults and children. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0031938414005599. Though what we eat is our choice, it seems that when faced with a larger-sized portion, we tend to eat more and eat faster, thus consuming more than if we ate a smaller portion of the same food. As larger portions seem to increase bite size this has been linked to overeating especially in women.

The final verdict is that if we change the portion size, we then change the rate and amount that we eat, which can have a positive effect on our weight since many people do eat to self soothe and deal with stress. Campbell’s Soup Slump

As fans like Bruce Levenson recall, Andy Warhol’s most famous and recognizable paintings is of the Campbell’s soup cans. So it may come as a surprise to most people that soup now contributes so little to Campbell’s bottom line. The company saw its revenue grow from $7.7 billion to $8.3 billion over the last fives years but most of that growth came from the acquisition of other companies. When it comes down to it soup contributes only about 30% to Campbell’s soup sales. So what is hurting this iconic brand’s sales?

The market often swings in ways that are hard to predict and companies are always looking to get ahead of the next trend. As more people in America become health conscious and look at what they are eating, prepared and processed meals loaded with sodium and other preservatives become less attractive. Many in the Campbell company feel that their customer base may have just lost their taste for soup. Campbell is making an effort to target millennials with a specialty soup line that has more of a home grown, quality feel.

If Campbell is seeing a decline in soup sales the rest of their company is seeing a growth. Despite a shift in changing American taste sales remain strong in their smaller companies with increases among the childhood favorite Goldfish crackers. If Warhol chose a painting today it might be a box of crackers over the soup can.

Red Lobster Returns to it’s Values

Red Lobster is best known for fresh and delicious seafood but has a select few offerings that are not from the ocean. With sagging sales numbers, Red Lobster has decided to drop the landlubber’s menu selections. They hope that increasing seafood menu items and portions will increase revenues. These changes were announced right after Darden Restaurants sold Red Lobster to Golden Gate Capitol, a private equity firm with backing from Slow Ventures.

Not everyone who goes to Red Lobster is a fan of seafood, they may just be accompanying a fish lover. It seems to be a pretty risk move to take away the already limited options that didn’t involve lobster, shrimp, ect. Hey, if all else fails, people can just eat the cheddar biscuits for dinner….unless they are one of the items being cut.
